Diary Study: long term UX research of competitor’s app

Pilot Diary study > Trading with real money

About This Project

Diary studies are a valuable and in-depth qualitative research method used to gain a comprehensive understanding of user behavior and context over an extended period of time. By providing a platform for users to record their experiences and interactions with a product or service, researchers are able to uncover previously unknown insights and uncover patterns in user behavior that may not be immediately visible in a single (initial) experience.

One of the key benefits of diary studies is the ability to capture established user habits and behavior over time, which can be difficult to uncover using traditional research methods. This allows researchers to gain a more holistic and nuanced understanding of how users interact with a product or service, and identify potential areas for improvement or optimization.

Furthermore, diary studies are highly customizable, allowing researchers to tailor the study to fit the specific needs and goals of the research project. This allows for greater flexibility in terms of data collection and analysis and enables researchers to explore and test hypotheses in a more targeted and focused manner.

Problem definition

Identifying areas where the competitor’s app excels or falls short compared to our own product, and understanding user perceptions and behaviors towards the competitor’s app.

Outline the target user group and any specific research questions or hypotheses to be explored during the study.

Target User Group

The target user group for this diary study are current users of our own product, who have also used the competitor’s app.

Preparing Materials and Working Environment

I created questions and notifications for users on the Trello board.

All participants should set up email forwarding rules from their email to ours for any emails related to the investigated app.

Participants should use the app several times daily, record short videos immediately after each use, and also create daily summary videos.

Start the pilot with one participant

Start the pilot with one participant by sending him the Trello board with the questions and notifications. I instructed him to set up the email forwarding rules and begin using the app as directed. Monitor his progress and engagement to identify areas that may need adjustment before scaling up to additional participants.
